Volunteer And Get Involved

Although there are only 143 shacks at Era, Burning Palms and Little Garie, their inhabitants have made a big difference to the Royal National Park. Volunteering their time and money, they have helped the NPWS take care of the natural Environment, bushwalkers and visitors' safety.

Countless hours have been dedicated to Landcare, Surf Life Saving and The Shack Open Days to ensure this living heritage continues.

Surf Life Saving

The Cabin Community is devoted to safeguarding life on Burning Palms, Era and Garie Beaches.

All beaches are accessible to tourists visiting the area, 365 days a year. Our volunteer Surf Lifesavers patrol over the Spring, Summer and Autumn months of the year (September to April) on weekends and Public Holidays, ensuring that visitors have a safe and enjoyable time at our beaches.

Landcare

The Royal National Park Cabin Communities Landcare Group was founded in April 1993, by members of the three State Heritage listed cabin communities of Little Garie, Era and Burning Palms. One of the group's early projects was to undertake works to stabilise the 0.5ha Aboriginal Midden at North Era Beach.

In addition to the Midden works, projects have been undertaken in the cabin precincts to address fire hazards, water quality, bush regeneration, weed control dune stabilisation and erosion issues. Many cabin community members are active in litter collection and weed control on a regular basis

The RNP Cabin Community Landcare group schedules a work morning on the third Sunday of every second month rotating communities. this is followed by a BBQ for helpers. For more information on the ongoing Landcare project, please click the button below

Shack Open Days

Join us for a guided walking tour of one of the shack communities in the Royal National Park and see how the owners built and maintained their shacks within this remote location. Hear how the shacks survived to gain State Heritage registration in 2012, come along to meet the people and hear their stories. A guided tour of a selection of shacks will be open and lunch and refreshments provided on the day

The day starts from the Garawarra Farm or Garie Beach car park (off Garie Road), followed by a guided walking tour to the selected shacks in the community. This tour is recommended for moderate to good fitness levels with steep and unstable surfaces throughout the tour. Allow approximately half a day for the adventure and members are asked to provide there own refillable drink bottle, sunscreen, swimming gear. and any snacks required to keep them going.
